Republican hopeful Ted Cruz has bowed out of the Presidential candidate race, after rival Donald Trump claimed victory in the Indiana primary late last night.

Businessman and reality TV personality Trump became the party's presumptive nominee after Cruz announced he was suspending his campaign.

In the primary, Trump took home 53 per cent of the vote, according to figures from Associated Press, while rival Cruz tailed behind with 37 per cent.

"From the beginning I’ve said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory," said Cruz in a speech. "Tonight, I’m sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed."

The Democratic presidential candidate race in the midwestern state was much closer fought, with Bernie Sanders winning with 52 per cent, ahead of rival Hilary Clinton's 48 per cent. However, Clinton still leads the candidate race overall.

Trump did not miss out on the opportunity to have a dig at Clinton in his speech.

"We're going after Hilary Clinton," he said. "She will not be a great president. She will not be a good president. She will be a poor president."

However, Trump is not the only one who has been trading harsh words recently. According to various reports, a US aide has urged Prime Minister David Cameron to apologise to Trump for calling the businessman "stupid and wrong".
