Terry crash probe after man injured
CHELSEA captain John Terry was breathalysed and quizzed by police after his car collided with a club employee following Tuesday night’s defeat to Inter Milan.
Terry’s Range Rover struck deputy security manager Steve Rowley at low speed as the England star drove out of Stamford Bridge through a crowd following the Champions League last-16 match. Police initially said Rowley had suffered a broken leg, but he last night said it had merely been “badly bruised”.
Terry drove away from the scene and the club added he had been unaware of the accident until telephoned later. Rowley confirmed Terry had called him to apologise and that there was “no bad feeling” over what he termed “a complete accident”.
Police visited Terry at his Surrey home in the early hours of Wednesday morning and found him to be within the legal alcohol limit. A Metropolitan police spokesman added that inquiries would continue.
A Chelsea spokesman said: “Driving out of the stadium at approximately 1-2mph in a queue of traffic, his car was surrounded by photographers and fans. In the melee that ensued a member of Chelsea’s security staff was knocked to the ground, making contact with the car.”
Terry was last month stripped of the England captaincy following allegations about his off-field behaviour.
