Terry shock at title surrender
CHELSEA captain John Terry admits he is at a loss to explain the limp surrender against Manchester United that ruined their title chances and looks likely to cost manager Carlo Ancelotti his job.
The Blues arrived at Old Trafford on Sunday knowing a win would lift them top of the Premier League with two games left, but never looked like ending United’s home unbeaten record in a 2-1 loss that effectively ensured the trophy will head north again this month.
Conceding after 36 seconds to Javier Hernandez set the grim tone for the visitors and when asked why they started so badly, Terry said: “I’m not sure. We were fully prepared and it’s one of those things.
“We felt it was in our hands and we could come here and we could win the game. Sometimes, you have to hold your hands up.
“We came here hoping and praying that we started well and the role was completely reversed. They had a great start and got the early goal, which settled them.”
Chelsea’s failure to win any silverware is tipped to end Ancelotti’s tenure, with former Stamford Bridge hero Gianfranco Zola rumoured to be in the frame for a coaching role in any new set up, although not as manager. Guus Hiddink, who enjoyed a successful short spell in charge before Ancelotti, is among the favourites to replace the Italian.
