Kerching: Tesla Model 3 pre-orders are now worth $14bn

People are seriously loving Tesla's newest car.

Just a week after the Model 3 was revealed, pre-orders worth $14bn (£9.9bn) have flooded in from eager car fans.

That's an impressive 325,000 vehicles – roughly the equivalent of around 32 orders every single minute for the $35,000 electric car.

"This interest has spread completely organically. Unlike other major product launches, we haven’t advertised or paid for any endorsements," said Tesla in a blog post.

"Instead, this has been a true grassroots effort driven by the passion of the Tesla team that’s worked so hard to get to this point and our current and future customers who believe so strongly in what we are trying to achieve. Most importantly, we are all taking a huge step towards a better future by accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation."

Those who put in an order will have to wait until at least the end of 2017 until they can hit the road, however, the huge demand could in fact scupper plans as boss Elon Musk has admitted that it could pose challenges during production.

This week, the company blamed its own hubris at putting too much tech in its Model X vehicle, which resulted in delays.

Of course, that $14bn figure relies on those orders being completed.
