Test rookie James Vince eager for debut as England prepare for Sri Lanka battle at Headingley

Test hopeful James Vince admits it is beginning to resonate that his debut may be just hours away as England prepare to kickstart their international summer against Sri Lanka at Headingley on Thursday.

Hampshire batsman Vince is poised to fill the middle-order vacancy created by the retirement of James Taylor, who was forced to call time on his career last month due to a serious heart condition.

“I had dinner last night with the team and that’s sort of when it sank in really. It’s great to be here and I can’t wait to get going now,” said Vince. “Hopefully I get the chance to play and if I do it’ll be a very proud moment. I just want to try and enjoy every second and do well.”

Vince, who has skippered England Lions, is one of two uncapped players in England’s 12-man squad for the clash, the other being Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball.
