● International seed and fertiliser company Monsanto publishes its first-quarter earnings on Thursday.
● Spread betting company IG Group publishes its interim results on 18 January.
● AstraZeneca, BSkyB, Charles Stanley and Vedanta Resources all publish earnings announcements on 27 January.
● Aluminium producer Alcoa traditionally kicks off the US’s fourth-quarter earnings season, publishing its results on 11 January. The following week is the real US earnings season.
ECONOMICS NEWS
● The Federal Open Markets Committee publishes the minutes of its last 2010 meeting tonight while non-farm payrolls are out at lunchtime on Friday.
● Markit this week publishes its purchasing managers’ indices for the UK and the Eurozone, following yesterday’s US ISM. This will give some further idea of how the recovery will hold up in early 2011.
● Halifax house price index for December will be announced this week; the expectation is for a fall of about 0.7 per cent.
● Third quarter GDP for the Eurozone will be published on Friday 7 January.
MARKET NEWS
● The Japanese stock market is traditionally closed on the second Monday of January for the country’s Coming of Age holiday.
● On 17 January, the New York Stock Exchange is shut for Martin Luther King, Jr Day.
● The World Economic Forum starts on 26 January and runs until 30 January. It is to be held as usual in Davos and will discuss the theme: Shared Norms for the New Reality.
● The impact of the Federal Reserve’s QE on the markets may be clearer following the FOMC’s meeting on 25-26 January.
POLITICAL NEWS
● France takes over the rotating presidency of the G20 in 2011 while Hungary is president of the European Council for the first six months of the year.
● The House of Commons will not be sitting this week due to the Christmas recess. It will return on Monday 10 January.
● Tomorrow the US House of Representatives convenes for the 111th Congress, 2nd session.
● Estonia will have become the 17th country to join the Eurozone on 1 January 2011. There will be a dual circulation period of two weeks.
