SHARES in supermarket Morrison have been on the rise since the end of March, as shoppers still favour promotions in an attempt to offset the squeeze on income from rising prices. Products on promotion account for 40 per cent of sales, which is now at a record high. They are really bringing the competition to the market. Capital Spreads quotes 286.6p-287.1p.

It was a crazy roller-coaster ride yesterday at 2pm when S&P announced that it was reducing the outlook on the US to negative. The dollar initially plunged, precious metals rallied, while US indices and crude dived. CFD traders piled in to the momentum of the fall in the Dow, as it fell through 12,200 support. With the downtrend resumed from last week it looks like we may see 12,000 before we see 12,300 again. Spread Co offers 12,124-12,125 on the US30.

After tipping William Hill at 180p a week ago, the shares have since popped up to a high of 201.7p yesterday. Strong long-term resistance at the 200p level held it back again, so anyone still holding a long in William Hill should lighten their positions, as it should get back to 200p. Spread Co offers a spread on William Hill of 192.2p-192.5p.

Markets may be winding down in Europe for the Easter break but across the Atlantic the first quarter earnings season continues to gather pace. Telecoms giant AT&T is due to publish results on Wednesday and the sector certainly isn’t short of its fair share of M&A news. Top of the list right now is the mooted alliance between AT&T and T-Mobile, although with the regulatory hurdles likely to be high, any merger is far from a done deal. Positive signals however could help push the stock higher. Current IG Markets price is $30.22-$30.23.

$1,500/oz is comfortably in sight for gold as the old threat of global inflation ramps up prices, whilst renewed concerns over the sovereign debt situation also add to investor nerves. A bout of opportunistic profit taking may be on the cards in the shorter-term, but many clearly believe that the longer-term trend is firmly established. Current IG Markets price on spot gold is $1,495.36-$1,495.86.
