Bentley’s first electric car is almost here. The new Torcal luxury SUV makes its full debut in September, and while details remain limited, here’s everything we know so far.
Bentley is finally ready to join the electric car party, and its first EV now has a name. Meet the Torcal, a new luxury SUV due to make its full debut on 23 September. Bentley has released a single teaser image and a handful of early details, but even from what we’ve seen so far, this looks like a car built to carry Bentley into the electric age while keeping everything that makes a Bentley feel like a Bentley. There’s no sign of the brand tearing up its own rulebook to get there.
After all, launching your first EV isn’t quite as straightforward as it once looked. Luxury buyers have become a little more cautious about going electric, so Bentley appears to be taking the sensible route with a practical, everyday SUV. Don’t expect an attention-grabbing design experiment.
Why is it called the Torcal?
Bentley has developed something of a habit of naming its cars after famous landscapes, and the Torcal continues the theme. The name comes from El Torcal de Antequera in southern Spain, a striking limestone landscape known for its dramatic rock formations and winding natural pathways.
There’s another layer to it, too. Torcal is derived from the Latin word torquere, meaning “to twist,” a fitting reference for an electric SUV that’s almost certain to produce plenty of torque, even if Bentley hasn’t revealed exactly how much yet.
What do we know so far?
Bentley is keeping most of the important numbers under wraps, but it has confirmed a few key details.
The Torcal will sit below the Bentayga in the range and measure around five metres long, making it a sizeable SUV without becoming unwieldy. Bentley also says it’ll offer more than 300 miles of range, putting it firmly in line with expectations for a luxury electric SUV in 2026.
Beyond that, we’re still waiting for figures covering power, battery size, charging speeds and performance. Those are likely to arrive closer to the car’s full reveal in September.
Bentley Torcal design
The teaser image doesn’t give away much, but it does reveal a familiar Bentley silhouette rather than something radically futuristic.
From what Bentley has shown, the Torcal appears to retain the brand’s traditional proportions, with a bluff front end, pronounced rear haunches and slim horizontal rear lights. Earlier information released by Bentley also points to an illuminated front grille featuring a three-dimensional diamond pattern, although we’ll have to wait until the full unveiling to see how it all comes together.
Inside, Bentley says buyers can expect the usual mix of handcrafted luxury and modern technology, with premium materials and physical controls sitting alongside a large central touchscreen. That’ll be welcome news for anyone who still prefers a proper switch over endlessly tapping through menus.
The real hurdle for Bentley’s first EV
Plenty of brands can build a competent luxury electric SUV in 2026. Getting traditional Bentley buyers to actually choose one over a W12 Bentayga is the harder trick.
The market for high-end EVs has cooled compared with the optimism of a few years ago, and buyers are looking for electric cars that simply happen to be excellent luxury cars, rather than futuristic showcases packed with gimmicks.
That appears to be the direction Bentley is taking with the Torcal. The company wants an SUV that reads as a Bentley the moment you sit in it, with the electric powertrain very much in the background. That looks like the smarter approach to me, at least until we’ve seen the car in the metal.
Bentley Torcal release date
Bentley will unveil the Torcal in full on 23 September, when we expect to learn more about its performance, battery technology, pricing and UK availability.
Until then, there’s plenty we still don’t know. But if Bentley can deliver the refinement and craftsmanship the brand is known for in an electric package, the Torcal could become one of the most significant new luxury SUVs of the year.
