Tottenham rocked as ankle ligament damage set to sideline striker Harry Kane for up to two months
TottenhamT striker Harry Kane is set to sidelined for the next two months with the ankle injury picked up during his side’s Premier League victory over Sunderland on Sunday.
Kane underwent two scans yesterday, which showed that the 23-year-old had escaped a fracture but had sustained ligament damage during a collision with Black Cats defender Papy Djilobodji.
Should concerns be realised and the injury fall into the category of grade two ligament damage, Tottenham could well find themselves without their principal forward for a period of between six and eight weeks.
The top end of that timescale would mean Kane missing six Premier League matches, including fixtures against leaders Manchester City, reigning champions Leicester City and north London rivals Arsenal.
Spurs also have two Champions League fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen and one against CSKA Moscow within that span, while England play Scotland in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on 11 November.
Kane’s injury is likely to thrust Vincent Janssen under the spotlight. The 22-year-old has made minimal impact so far since an £18.5m move from AZ Alkmaar in the summer but is the obvious candidate to replace the stricken Kane.
Despite making a slow start to the campaign, the likely goals of Kane, who notched 25 last season, would need to be replaced if Tottenham are to maintain their position in the higher echelons of the Premier League.
The news was not all bad for Tottenham, however, as midfielder Dele Alli signed a new six-year contract at the club, which is set to keep the 20-year-old at White Hart Lane until 2022. Alli was signed for £5m from MK Dons in February 2015 and has scored 11 goals in 38 top flight matches.
