US president Donald Trump has said he wants Ukraine and China to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son.

Speaking on a lawn outside the White House, Trump said he would “recommend” that Ukraine opens an investigation into the Bidens, and later added he thought China should do the same too.

Trump’s previous efforts to persuade Ukraian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy to launch an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter were the subject of a whistleblower complaint alleging the president withheld aid to pressure Kiev’s leader into opening the probe.

A transcript of the call between the two leaders has since been released by the White House.

“I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens,” Trump said in response to a question on what he wanted Zelenskiy to do.

Trump also said he thought China should launch an investigation into the Bidens, alluding to unproven allegations made by him and his lawyer about Hunter Biden’s business activities in the country.

“And by the way, likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens. Because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine,” said Trump.
