Commuters have been hit by severe delays during rush hour this morning after part of the Victoria line was suspended.

The line, which runs between Brixton and Walthamstow central, is suspended between Brixton and Victoria due to a fire alert, Transport for London (TfL) said on Twitter.

There are severe delays on the rest of the line, with customers advised to take an alternative route. TfL said passengers’ tickets would be accepted on rail, underground, and bus services.

Some passengers took to Twitter to complain about station closures on other parts of the Victoria Line, including Blackhorse Road station. TfL said in response: “some stations may close for short periods to prevent overcrowding”.

“Hooray. Fire on the Victoria Line apparently, every station between Brixton and Victoria is closed. No idea whatsoever how I’m getting to work this morning,” tweeted another passenger.

When asked by one Twitter user when the line would reopen, a TfL staff member replied: “I can’t honestly say at present when this will be cleared but we will update the feed as soon as the situation changes”.

The Victoria line is London’s fourth busiest tube line, beaten only by Northern, Central, and Waterloo. Passengers made 263m journeys on the line in 2016/17, according to TfL figures.

Victoria underground station is ranked as London’s fourth busiest tube station, behind King’s Cross, Waterloo, and Oxford Circus.

All other tube lines are operating with good service.
