Tube traffic rises by a third in a decade to nearly 1.3bn journeys
IF THE Tube carriage feels a bit more crowded than it used to be, it’s no wonder: the London Underground carried passengers on a whopping 1.265bn journeys in the last financial year, meaning the Tube is now taking a third more passengers than it was a decade ago.
Compared to the previous year, journey numbers are up three per cent, the London Underground said, adding that it has introduced more train on the Jubilee and Piccadilly lines. At peak times, there are up to 532 trains running on the Tube.
“In the face of phenomenal customer demand our iconic Tube network has successfully transported a staggering number of people on more services than ever before,” said Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London. “We can’t afford to rest on our laurels, however.”
Transport for London has spent months in talks with unions as it attempts to close all ticket offices and move staff into stations, costing a net 750 jobs.
