Two London hospitals announce major incident after severe flooding in the capital and south east

The Environment Agency has six flood warnings in place across the country’s south east as the major incidents continue to affect two of the capital’s hospitals.

Whipps Cross Hospital has announced it has been forced to evacuate around 100 inpatients owing to flooding.

An entire block is currently without power with no timeline as yet known for its return.

Patients are being redirected to surrounding hospitals, including St. Barts, Royal London and Homerton.

Newham Hospital has also been affected by the downpours, as it is having to urge patients to find alternative treatment centres.

Homes, roads and London underground stations were flooded over the weekend as thunderstorms battered the south of England.

Whipps Cross Hospital announced it was experiencing “operational difficulties” and asked patients to use alternative A&E options “if possible”.

Newham Hospital had a similar appeal, writing on its Twitter account: “Our Emergency Department has flooded in some areas. We’re still here if you need us but to help us while we fix things please attend a neighbouring hospital if possible. Thank you!”

More to come.
