Tyson Fury trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder – and $30m payday – set to be postponed until October
The third fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, which was set to earn the British boxer at least $30m, is set to be postponed.
The BBC and ESPN reported that Fury tested positive for Covid-19 this week, forcing the fight scheduled for 24 July in Las Vegas to be shelved. It is likely to take place in October instead.
The 32-year-old earned around $26m from his last contest with American Wilder in February last year, according to Forbes.
On that occasion, the purse was split equally between both men. This time, the Englishman is entitled to 60 per cent of the purse by virtue of being WBC heavyweight champion.
Fury had expected his next fight to be a long-awaited showdown with fellow Briton Anthony Joshua, who holds the other three main heavyweight titles.
But Wilder successfully won a legal challenge requiring Fury to fulfil their agreement for a trilogy fight before defending his belt against anyone else.
Neither Fury or Wilder have fought since the seventh-round stoppage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas 17 months ago.
Joshua’s last outing came in December, when he beat Kubrat Pulev at Wembley Arena. He is due to face Oleksandr Usyk in September.
