Unsettled Liverpool manager Benitez admits he would like to coach Spain
RAFAEL BENITEZ says he dreams of one day coaching the Spanish national team – but insists he has no plans to leave Liverpool just yet.
Under-fire Benitez has been tipped to quit Anfield this summer after failing to secure qualification for the Champions League.
Inter Milan have been linked but Juventus, another potential destination, have opted for Luigi del Neri and Benitez says his immediate future lies with Liverpool.
“Right now I have four years left in my contract with Liverpool and I am very happy there,” he said. “But, of course, in a few years, once [Spain coach Vicente] Del Bosque ends his work, I would like to be Spain coach. All Spanish coaches would like to become national team manager.”
Benitez, who led the Reds to Champions League, FA Cup, European Super Cup and Community Shield in his first two years, says he has been a victim of his own success.
“We made a huge mistake, as we won four titles at the start,” he added. “Then people ask for more, when in reality in the Premier League it’s assumed a coach needs time to adapt. [Sir Alex] Ferguson took seven years to win the Premier League.”
