Vauxhall could announce plans to build electric vans at its plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire as early as next week, reports tonight suggested.
The future of Ellesmere Port is in doubt since Stellantis said it would not build the new version of Vauxhall's Astra there.

Vauxhall could announce plans to build electric vans at its plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire as early as today.

It is understood that the new investment into the plant could be worth hundreds of millions of plans, and would protect about 1,000 jobs.

If so, the investment would complete an excellent few days for the UK car industry, following Nissan’s announcement of a new battery gigafactory in Sunderland last week.

The future of Vauxhall’s plant in Cheshire has been in doubt since owner Stellantis said it would not build the new version of the Astra there.

The car giant, which was formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot owner PSA earlier this year, has been in talks with the government over the site’s future for months.

Back in April the Telegraph reported that the government has offered Stellantis a portion of the £500m pot it has set aside to develop electric cars and their supply chains to keep the factory’s doors open.

A spokesman for Stellantis declined to comment.
