Watertight defence will keep us on top, says Cech
CHELSEA goalkeeper Petr Cech is banking on their miserly defensive record to keep the table-toppers looking down on the rest of the Premier League.
Cech has conceded just twice in nine top flight fixtures this season as the Blues have picked up where they left off in last season’s double-winning campaign.
Wolves were the latest team to be sent packing, and shut out for 90 minutes by the Czech Republic stopper, as Carlo Ancelotti’s team extended their lead to five points on Saturday. And the former Rennes player is confident that Chelsea’s watertight rearguard will prove a solid foundation for a lengthy stay at the summit.
“When you keep a clean sheet you have the biggest chance of winning games,” said Cech.
“We are not conceding goals at home, but the most important thing is that we are winning those games. You would swap keeping a clean sheet for winning the game every time, but I am pleased all those clean sheets are helping us to win games. Last season our home record helped us to win the double, so hopefully it will do the same this season.”
Cech is yet to concede at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea’s sole home defeat, an uncharacteristic 4-3 Carling Cup defeat to Newcastle, coming with Ross Turnbull in goal.
