Westwood turns his back on the PGA Tour millions
RYDER CUP hero Lee Westwood will continue to fly the European flag in 2011 after snubbing the chance to play on the American PGA Tour.
The 37-year-old moved up to second in the world rankings after helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup at the weekend.
And he could even depose Tiger Woods as the world’s No1 player with a first or second finish at the Dunhill Links Championship, which starts today.
World No5 Jim Furyk earned more than £7m by winning the FedEx Cup play-offs a fortnight ago, but Westwood has vowed to turn his back on the fortunes across the pond and put his family first.
“The FedEx Cup sits right in the middle of the kids summer holidays and I like going on holiday with them.
“I don’t want to be dictated to by having to go to America to play FedEx Cup when it doesn’t really mean that much to me. It doesn’t mean enough to me anyway.”
Westwood is one of nine European Ryder Cup heroes, plus captain Colin Montgomerie, to play on the Scottish Links’ this week with the finale taking place at St Andrews on Sunday.
