Whitechapel station disruption: Weekend closures on 16 and 17 January to make way for Crossrail modernisation
Whitechapel station will be closed over the coming weekend as work begins on making the station ready for the arrival of Crossrail 2.
A new temporary entrance and ticket hall will be set up over the weekend ready for Monday, so the 140-year-old station can be modernised. The surrounding area on Court Street will become pedestrianised.
By 2018, Crossrail platforms will be integrated with the existing Tube and Overground services which run through the east London station. Access to the station will also become step-free.
"When the work is complete customers will have a brighter, more spacious station with a bigger ticket hall and lift access to all train platforms from street level. In the meantime we are doing everything possible to keep disruption for our customers to an absolute minimum,” said Transport for London's Crossrail operations director Howard Smith.
Some London Underground services between Highbury and Islington and Shadwell, and Surrey Quays and New Cross will also be disrupted as part of the work, between Saturday 13 February and Saturday 21 February.
