Wolves have the fight to tame Kenny’s Reds

KENNY Dalglish hasn’t made the dream return to management that many Liverpool fans would have hoped for, taking just one point from his opening three games. It could have been even worse had Dirk Kuyt not converted a second half penalty against Everton on Sunday. Liverpool travel to Wolves for tomorrow’s lunchtime fixture and it will be a major concern for Dalglish that his side have taken just five points from a possible 33 on the road this season.
Wolves are the only team to have a worse away record than Liverpool in the league this term with just one win and one draw from their 11 contests. However, that one victory came at Anfield just a few weeks ago and Mick McCarthy will be keen to replicate Blackpool’s recent achievement in doing the double over the Reds.
The Black Country side are in a desperate relegation fight, but it is very tight at the bottom and a win tomorrow would lift them to within just two points of Liverpool. They are a best priced 12/5 on Betdaq and there are a few reasons why that isn’t a bad price at all. Wolves have scored in 10 of their 11 home matches so far this campaign and have won three of their last four, including a 1-0 victory against Chelsea.
Mick McCarthy’s men almost nicked a point at Eastlands against Manchester City last weekend, but they have won four of their last nine home games against middle-third opposition, losing just the once. As we know, Liverpool have only won one on the road this season, but they have lost their last five and have also won just one of their last nine trips to bottom-six sides.
Liverpool are as short as 5/4 with Paddy Power and that is far too short for a team with such a terrible away record. I’d much rather be a layer on Betdaq at that price, but I’ll be backing Wolves to claim a sixth win of the season at Molineux.
Wolves’ last three games across all competitions have produced a total of 16 goals, but their league fixtures are usually relatively tight. They have won three of their last six league contests, all 1-0, and a repeat of that scoreline looks decent value at 8/1 with Paddy Power. On that basis, I’d also advise spread bettors to sell goals at 2.5 with Sporting Index. There have been two or fewer goals in all five meetings between these sides since Wolves first entered the Premier League in 2003/04.
