Younger viewers are turning away from traditional television viewing and watching Netflix and iPlayer instead

Only half of young people are watching broadcasts through live television.

The figures are from media watchdog Ofcom’s latest research into the state of Public Service Broadcasters, released today.

It found that viewers aged 16 to 24 years old are increasingly using online, on demand, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and the broadcasters’ services like BBC iPlayer and Channel 4’s All4.

Ofcom said that public service broadcasters are “well placed to take advantage” of these changes, but as online and on demand viewing increase, the rules around access to public service broadcasting will have to change to keep up with developments in technology.

Ofcom’s Sharon White said:

Public service broadcasters must continue to find new ways of connecting with audiences, and the public service broadcasting system needs to evolve to ensure it remains effective in digital age.
