Tesco’s former finance boss Andrew Higginson is expected to be appointed as the chairman of rival supermarket chain Morrisons.

Current chairman Sir Ian Gibson has been in the position since September 2007, and last month announced his intention to stand down.

Retail veteran Higginson spent 15 years on the board at Tesco, with 11 as finance director then four as chairman of Tesco Bank.

Previously, he was finance director at Laura Ashley and The Burton Group.

He left Tesco in 2012 and took up other jobs, including chairman of Poundland and of N Brown group.

The supermarket sector is undergoing a period of flux currently, with market leader Tesco facing stiff challenges from discount retailers in particular.

Higginson’s appointment will be the second big change to top names in the sector this month – Tesco’s chief executive Philip Clarke quit on 21 July after struggling to turn the group’s fortunes around.

Higginson’s appointment was first reported by Sky News.

Morrisons declined to comment.
