South London commuter misery as Kennington “river” and Elephant & Castle roadworks combine to create travel chaos

South London commuters faced another morning of misery as yesterday's burst water main in Kennington and ongoing road works combined to create travel chaos.

Routes around Stockwell, Vauxhall,  Elephant & Castle, Camberwell, Peckham, Borough and – of course – Kennington itself have been “curtailed”, TfL said.

Those buses that did make it towards central London were caught in boot-to-bonnet traffic jams, excerbated by ongoing works around Elephant & Castle roundabout.

The gridlock, which began as early as 7am, forced commuters to leave the bus and make the rest of their journey on foot.

Given the heat, the frustration is getting to everyone caught up in the chaos.
