Business leaders are putting more pressure on the government today to move ahead with building a new runway at Heathrow.

At an event in Westminster this morning, Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kaye, Icap group chief executive Michael Spencer and Arora International chief executive Surinder Arora, among others, will call on ministers to make a swift decision on the Airports Commission’s final report.

The commission recommended building a third runway at Heathrow in July. At the time, Prime Minister David Cameron said that the government would decide whether to accept the commission’s proposal “by the end of the year”.

But the decision is expected to be a difficult one for Cameron, who faces vocal opposition to the third runway within his own party from the likes of London Mayor Boris Johnson and Conservative City Hall hopeful Zac Goldsmith.

Yesterday, all the Tory members of the London Assembly voted against Heathrow’s expansion, following a fiery question and answer session with Airports Commission chairman Sir Howard Davies.
