iPhone 6S and 6S Plus UK release date and pre-order sales: Apple’s new flagship iPhone is already the UK’s second most popular phone – before hitting the stores

Apple’s new iPhone is landing in UK stores tomorrow. But even before going on sale, it’s become the second most popular phone in the country, new figures show.

Based on pre-orders alone, Apple’s new iPhone is outstripping Samsung’s latest flagship phone, Galaxy S6. Released earlier this year, the Korean tech giant’s phone has been pushed down to third place.

The number one most popular phone by units sold remains last year’s model of the iPhone, the iPhone 6, according to data from price comparison site uSwitch, based on sales, searches and pre-orders of mobile phones.

The iPhone 6s was the star event at Apple’s launch earlier this month, and was unveiled alongside a new version of the iPad, the latest iteration of operating system iOS 9, and an updated Apple TV.

Apple hinted earlier this week that sales of the new model were on track to beating previous record-breaking sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which hit 10m units sold in the first weekend.

In a statement to CNBC, the company said:

The online demand for iPhone 6s Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period.
