Volkswagen is to announce its new boss today, after former chief executive Martin Winterkorn stepped down on Wednesday amid the ongoing emissions scandal.

The favourite to replace him is Porsche boss Mattias Muller, according to several reports.

Reacting quickly to Winterkorn's departure on Wednesday, the car maker is expected to make an announcement about the appointment today, when its board meets.

Winterkorn stepped down after it was revealed the company had manipulated emissions tests in the US, resulting in a worldwide scandal.

Muller, a former head of product strategy for VW, has been the frontrunner for the job. The 62-year-old was also in the running alongside Audi chief Rupert Stadler and another internal senior executive Herbert Diess.

Volkswagen had no comment.

A separate report claims Volkswagen will fire a further three executives as the fall out from the scandal rumbles on.

It's taken down shares in carmakers almost across the board, including BMW, Peugeot, Daimler and Renault.
