Storm Jonas which has wreaked havoc across the US east coast is expected to bring more flooding to the already storm battered UK.

Remnants of the storm system will hit the UK on Tuesday, forecasters say, and continue into Wednesday bringing as much as 20cm of rain to some locations.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for Wales, north west England and west Scotland. While it won't bring snow, the forecaster has warned people to be prepared for rain and flooding.

Warm air of tropical origins is expected to be entrained into the system, leading to abundant moisture and heavy rain.

Many parts of the warning area could see 50-100 mm of rain, whilst the most exposed upland parts of north Wales, north-west England and south-west Scotland could see 150-200 mm.

As such, there is the potential for river flooding, and also standing water on roads. Strong and gusty south-west winds will also develop.

The combination of recent storms in the UK – Desmond, Eva and Frank – brought misery to thousands due to flooding and which is expected to result in a bill that runs into the billions of pounds.
