An EDF board member has resigned, as the French utility giant meets to greenlight the controversial Hinkley Point C power plant in Somerset.

Gerard Magnin stepped down from the 18-strong board, citing concerns over the project's affordability and its effect on France's appetite for renewable energy.

In a resignation letter to Chief Executive Jean-Bernard Levy, as reported by Reuters, said at the time of his appointment he'd expected EDF's focus to more towards renewable energy, rather than nuclear.

"As a board member proposed by the government shareholder, I no longer want to support a strategy that I do not agree with." He will not attend the board meeting in Paris.

He also said the project was financially risky, echoing the concerns of EDF's former chief financial officer, Thomas Piquemal, who resigned earlier this year.
