City Airport boss Sir Terry Morgan – who also happens to be the former Crossrail boss – stepping down to focus on HS2
Sir Terry Morgan is stepping down as chairman of London City Airport next month to focus on his new job heading up HS2.
Morgan, who has been at the helm of City Airport since March 2017, also happens to have been chairman of Crossrail Ltd, which today admitted the massive infrastructure project would overrun by nearly a year.
London City Airport plans to start the recruitment process to replace him shortly.
It was announced in July that he would take over from Sir David Higgins at HS2 from the start of this month.
He said it was "with some sadness" that he left the airport's board "but I am very confident that the airport will continue to flourish under the board, shareholders and Leadership Team, fulfilling its huge potential for London and the UK over the coming years."
Morgan – who has come under fire today for the hefty delay to Crossrail – was praised for his ability at managing major projects.
Hakim Drissi, chair of London City Airport’s appointments and remuneration committee, said: “On behalf of the board and shareholders of London City Airport, I would like to pay tribute to Sir Terry’s leadership of the board during a period of change and significant progress. His immense experience of infrastructure businesses and construction activity has been invaluable as we have put in place the foundations for the next phase of the airport’s growth.
"We wish to thank Sir Terry for his time and commitment, and wish him well in steering one of the most vital infrastructure projects for Britain’s long-term prosperity.”
Robert Sinclair, chief executive of London City Airport, added: “Sir Terry has been an excellent Chairman for London City Airport – one of the most respected, experienced and well- connected industry leaders in the UK. He has been extremely helpful to me personally, and to my leadership team. I wish him all the very best as he takes the helm at HS2, a significant national transport project.”
