Vince Cable to step down as Lib Dem leader next year
Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable could step down from his role next year, he announced today, as he revealed new rules for leadership contest to take place after Brexit.
The Twickenham MP, who has led the party since last year, revealed that he plans to quit "once Brexit is resolved or stopped" in March next year.

"Once Brexit is resolved or stopped – which may well take a long time – and if the new rules are agreed, that will be the time to conduct a leadership contest under the new rules," he said in a speech outlining party reforms.
Plans for the party, which is anti-Brexit, include widening membership, making it easier for new members to stand as candidates and opening up the party leadership to non-MPs.
"I am determined to lead the Liberal Democrats through this, turning us into a genuinely remade, new force," Cable said.
"From the fourth party in the House of Commons, to the first party in the minds of the country – and a contender once again for government."
