Alonso released from hospital but set to miss final test session

TWO-TIME Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso is recuperating at home after being released from hospital yesterday, three days after crashing into a wall during testing.

The Spaniard is to be replaced by McLaren reserve driver Kevin Magnussen for the final pre-season test, which starts today, as he recovers from concussion, despite the team’s insistence on Monday that Alonso’s test results were “completely normal”.

His discharging came as concerns for his health began to grow, amid scant explanation of the lengthy stay in hospital or details of the crash itself at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday. The new F1 season starts in Australia on 15 March.

McLaren have not revealed the speed Alonso was travelling at when he hit the wall at turn three or the G-force he felt upon crashing. However, they strongly denied suggestions this week that he was already unconscious before impact or that he had suffered an electric shock from an engineering malfunction.
