Apple October event: Updates to the Macbook Air, Mac Mini and iPad ranges

Today, Apple is launching some updates to some of its most popular hardware lines. Here's our roundup of what made its way across the stage in New York.

Macbook Air

The updated Macbook Air is now available with a 13.3in retina display, which Apple said is more than four times the resolution of its predecessor. It has up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1.5TB SSD memory.

The notebook has two thunderbolt ports for USB-C charging and an Intel i5 CPU. With thinner bezels, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a Force Touch trackpad, the Macbook Air is 10 per cent thinner than the 2011 model.

Starting at $1199, the Macbook Air is available to order today in space grey, aluminium and silver.

Mac mini

The Mac mini, Apple's desktop version of its operating system which requires users to provide their own monitor and accessories, will be much faster than the old version thanks to an Intel 8th generation CPU with four to six cores.

Additionally, the Mac mini is getting a boost from 16GB to 64GB of memory, and up to 2TB of solid-state drive space. Prices start at $799.

iPad Pro

Updates made to the iPad Pro means it now comes in 11inch and 12.9inch models, with Face ID, thinner bezels and no home button or headphone jack.

Charging via USB-C, the tablet will also support charging out capabilities to charge other iOS devices using its own power.

It has rounded corners, a liquid retina display similar to the iPhone XR, and runs on a new A12X bionic chip. Apple said it is faster than 92 per cent of the portable PC computers and tablets on the market, with memory ranges from 64GB to 1TB.

Additionally, the Apple Pencil will now magnetically clip on to the side of the iPad, and wirelessly charge. 

Prices for the iPad Pro start at $799 for the 11inch model, and $999 for the 12.9inch model.

Main takeaways

Interestingly, the theme of the day appeared to be a greener Apple. A lot of the focus today in announcements pulled towards using recycled materials, whether that's both the Mac updates being made from 100 per cent recycled aluminium or all Apple stores running entirely on renewable energy.
