Back speedy Waady to return to winning ways at Sandown
JOHN Gosden’s speedster WAADY was far too keen when stepped up in trip at Newbury in the Carnarvon Stakes last month and is interesting now back down to five furlongs in tomorrow’s Scurry Stakes at Sandown (2.55pm).
He caught my eye when whizzing up over course and distance in a Class Two handicap off a mark of 90 in April.
Although he will have to improve on that to get the better of his rivals in this Listed contest, he’s definitely worth supporting at a track where he is two from two.
Waady was a full six lengths clear of the Clive Cox-trained Profitable here two starts back. Profitable went on to win in Listed company at York’s Dante meeting and for that win has been burdened with a 3lb penalty. However, I’d expect one or two to be improving past him.
Likely is one to watch having been dubbed a “very smart” filly by trainer David Barron during her preparation for last year’s Queen Mary Stakes.
She unfortunately suffered a setback and, despite being held in high regard by the yard after an eyecatching debut at Carlisle, she’s been off the track for more than a year and I’m happy to make this reappearance a watching brief.
Elysian Flyer won all three starts last season, but she disappointed behind Waady and Adaay on her reappearance at Newbury and her form simply isn’t as strong as my selection.
With an eye on Sunday’s offerings, Andrew Balding’s ABSOLUTELY SO is set to make his second outing of the season in the Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury (4.00pm).
The horse was as progressive as any last season posting a 16lb improvement in his 10 starts which included taking the step up from handicap company in his stride to land the Listed City of York Stakes.
Salisbury looks the ideal place for him to build on his pipe-opener, where he finished a respectable third behind Group One-performer Cable Bay at Haydock. He should take plenty of beating.
