BAE Systems has announced that the head of its US business Linda Hudson will be retiring from her post. A search is underway for a replacement, and Hudson has said she will remain in place for a date to be determined, but no later than 31 March 2014.

Hudson took charge in 2009, becoming the first female head of a major US defence firm. She has featured in Fortune Magazine’s 50 most powerful women list for the last four years.

From the Telegraph's business editor:

BAE's US chief Linda Hudson quits – ran up £66,300 bill last year holidaying w company jet. BAE said too risky for her to take normal plane.

— Alistair Osborne (@aliosborne20) August 20, 2013

Ian King, chief executive of BAE Systems, said:

I want to thank Linda for her many contributions to the Company. She has led the transformation of BAE Systems, Inc. by streamlining the organisation, reducing costs, increasing efficiency and speed to market, and diversifying the company's portfolio of products and services. She has done this while leading a culture change with a focus on delivering strong business performance and efficiency.
