Brisbane confirmed as host city for 2032 Olympics and Paralympics after uncontested vote
Brisbane has been confirmed as the host of the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
The decision – effectively already known as there was no other bidder – was rubber-stamped at an International Olympic Commitee (IOC) meeting in Tokyo today.
The delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics officially opens on Friday. Paris will host the Summer Games in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.
Brisbane had seemed sure to be selected host city for 2032 since being put on a new fast-track bidding process designed to make it less costly earlier this year.
IOC president Thomas Bach praised its “almost irresistible” offering earlier this year. He highlighted Australia’s passion for sport and political support for the bid at local and national level.
The selection of Australia’s third largest city has raised questions about possible conflicts of interest among high-ranking IOC officials.
Brisbane’s bid was led by John Coates, who is a vice-president of the IOC and helped amend the bidding process. Bach has dismissed the concerns, saying the decisions had been closely monitored.
London could bid to stage the 2036 Olympics just 24 years after is last stint as host city, Mayor Sadiq Khan said in May.
