British Airways lost 300,000 passengers in September amid pilot strikes

British Airways lost more than 300,000 passengers throughout September, as recent strikes forced it to cancel more than 2,000 flights.

The airline suffered an eight per cent decline in passenger numbers last month to 3.85m people.

That was down from 4.19m during the same period last year.

Last month, British Airways owner IAG slashed its 2019 profit guidance on the back of the strikes.

International Airlines Group warned that adjusted operating profit will fall €215m (£190m) below last year’s €3.49bn.

It estimated that Balpa’s strike action cost the airline €137m (£121m), while other disruption, such as threatened strikes by Heathrow Airport staff, cost BA €33m.

No more strikes are scheduled, but IAG has warned that any more will hit its full-year operating profit.

Pilots held strikes on 9 and 10 September, leading to a total of 2,325 flights being cancelled.

The strikes did not affect British Airways Cityflyer services at City Airport.

IAG shares were up 2.7 per cent this afternoon.
