Capello calls up rookie keeper pair for Foster
FABIO CAPELLO last night called upon two players with no Premier League experience to solve a fresh goalkeeping crisis.
The Italian was forced to dig deep into his resources after goalkeeper Ben Foster withdrew from the squad after suffering a back injury in training.
With Paul Robinson announcing his international retirement on Sunday, it left Joe Hart as the only goalkeeper in the squad.
So, Capello acted quickly in calling up Under-21 pair Scott Loach and Frankie Fielding to the senior ranks.
In a huge statement of intent, Capello showed no mercy on World Cup pair David James and Robert Green, and also the likes of Scott Carson and Chris Kirkland, who are looking to force their way back into the international arena.
Watford stopper Loach, 22, has just two seasons of Championship action under his belt, but has impressed the England hierarchy in his 12 appearances for the U-21s.
Similarly, Blackburn youngster Fielding, also 22, is yet to make a first-team appearance for Rovers and has only experienced senior football in loan spells at Wycombe, Northampton and Rochdale.
Both keepers are likely just to come along for the ride tonight, but one man expected to make his England bow tonight is Fulham striker Bobby Zamora, who is being tipped to make a first England start at the age of 29.
“I am lost for words,” said Zamora, who scored 21 goals for the Cottagers last season.
“I’m extremely proud to be called up to play for my country. I’m going to try to enjoy it all.”
