Charl can equal Seve’s haul
CHARL SCHWARTZEL will go in search of a little piece of history in Qatar next weekend – and you wouldn’t bet against the South African achieving it.
Victory at his home Joburg Open at the weekend was Charl’s second straight win on the Tour, following his success in the Africa Open.
The legendary Seve Ballesteros was the last player to win three successive European Tour events, back in 1986, and the way Charl is playing right now, he stands a great chance of joining the great man in the history books.
BEAUTFIUL STRIKER
A total score of 43-under-par over the two weeks is incredible golf and has rightly seen Charl shoot up to a career-high 35 on the world.
It also qualifies him for the US Masters in March, which is great news considering Charl is such a beautiful striker of the ball and his long, flighty game will suit the Augusta course to a tee.
It was great also to see Darren Clarke put in a great performance to finish in a tie for second in Johannesburg.
For me, the lasting memory of the weekend was seeing Darren chip in at the last and then turn back at his caddy with that little glint in his eye which I haven’t seen in a long time.
It was a glint which told the world he was back enjoying his game and hungry for success. How great would it be to see Darren back winning titles again this year?
While the European Tour lads reach for sunnier climbs, it’s been a pretty frustrating time for us back home with the weather forcing most courses to close for the last couple of weeks.
It’s been strange really, not being able to pick up a club, but at least it’s come at the right time of year, I’m enjoying the time off, to be honest.
