Corbyn the Musical: the Motorcycle Diaries to launch in Waterloo Theatre East in April

In a year set to be dominated by heavy political events including the EU referendum and a number of elections, the public will be afforded some respite by the launch of a musical about Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

In April, London's Waterloo Theatre East will open the production titled Corbyn the Musical: the Motorcycle Diaries, a musical-come-political-satire.

The musical will draw on the reported romance between Corbyn and key ally Diane Abbott in the 1970s, during which they toured East Germany.

The play, written by Bobby Friedman and Telegraph journalist Rupert Myers, envisages a nuclear stand-off between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Corbyn, set as the defining moment of his long political career, where he's reminded of the holiday as he searches for a solution.

"Part of the fun is that what comes next is often unexpected and sometimes shocking… This is a comedy with more twists and turns than a Jeremy Corbyn reshuffle, albeit much shorter," Friedman told the Telegraph.

The play, described as a cross between The Book of Mormon and The Thick of It, will feature the fictional appearances of Tony Blair, Ed Miliband and Boris Johnson.
