Disappointed Eley eyeing Sochi medal

SHORT-TRACK speed skater Jon Eley admits he is running out of chances to deliver on his Olympic promise, after another Winter Games passed without success.

Eley said nothing less than a medal would do in Vancouver after reaching the final in Torino in 2006, but has now revised his four-year plan to an eight-year mission, with Sochi in 2014 next in his sights.

“I believed I was in the shape to get a medal and if I’d managed to get into the final, I’m confident it would have happened,” said the 25-year-old, who was eliminated in the semi-final of the 500m event on Friday night.

“I’m very disappointed but it wasn’t my day. I’ve proved I can compete with these top skaters for the last four years; it just didn’t happen for me here. It’s frustrating but that’s short track. I still believe I can go to Sochi and win a medal. There is a lot more to come from me.”

The final gold medals of the Games fittingly went to Canada, after the hosts beat USA 3-2 in sudden death to win the men’s ice hockey.
