Do not partner me with Phil Mickelson at Ryder Cup, pleads US Open winner Dustin Johnson
US Open winner Dustin Johnson has urged United States captain Davis Love III not to partner him with team-mate Phil Mickelson during the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, which starts next week.
Johnson partnered five-time Major winner Mickelson for the first two games of his Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor in 2010, against Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer and then Padraig Harrington and Ross Fisher, both of which ended in 3&2 defeats.
The 32-year-old has since enjoyed an upturn in Ryder Cup form, winning four of his five other games and boasting a 57 per cent success rate, but he is adamant he should not be paired with Mickelson.
“I think I can partner pretty well with anyone, except for Phil,” said Johnson. “Me and Phil don’t partner well together.
“We play well against each other. I love Phil and we’re great friends but we have a lot more fun when we’re playing against each other than when we’re partners.”
Left-hander Mickelson made his Ryder Cup debut in 1995 and has a 46 per cent success rate in games in the competition.
Europe have won three successive Ryder Cups and six of the last seven.
