Double joy for England’s 4x100m sprint teams
ENGLAND’S men and women completed a sprint relay double in Delhi last night as Londoner Leon Baptiste claimed his second gold of the Commonwealth Games.
Baptiste, who won the 200m title on Sunday, helped the men’s 4x100m team outstrip Jamaica, who took silver, and bronze medallists India.
Mark Lewis-Francis, fresh from his silver in the 100m last week, ran a blistering anchor leg to earn glory for the quartet, which also included Marlon Devonish and Ryan Scott.
Baptiste said it had been “an awesome championships for me” while Lewis-Francis added: “Two years of hard work getting back on the track and I’m over the moon right now.”
Abi Oyepitan, the 200m silver medallist, added gold to her collection by helping England’s women take the 4x100m crown.
Oyepitan, Katharine Endacott, Montell Douglas and Laura Turner comfortably beat Ghana into second while India again took bronze.
Endacott was promoted to silver medallist in the individual 100m yesterday after Nigeria’s Osayemi Oludamola was disqualified for a positive drugs test. Oludamola’s team-mate Samuel Okon, a 110m hurdler, was expelled for the same substance.
