Eriksson: Sol did not like our facilities
NOTTS COUNTY boss Sven-Goran Eriksson admits he has no idea why Sol Campbell dramatically quit this week – but revealed the former England defender did not like the League Two club’s dressing rooms.
Campbell, whose partner is an interior designer, stunned the club on Tuesday by walking away from a £40,000-a-week contract just 29 days after signing, and having made just one appearance for the ambitious minnows.
The 35-year-old has yet to declare the reasons behind his U-turn, leaving former England head coach Eriksson feeling personally let down – and mystified. But the Swede said yesterday that former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth centre-back Campbell had not been impressed by Notts County’s modest facilities.
“I really don’t know the real reason. He didn’t like the training pitch and the dressing room and things like that but he knew that before because we showed him around before he signed,” said Eriksson.
“You can’t build a new training ground in four or five weeks. It takes time to make the stadium better, it can’t be done over a weekend so I think that’s unfair.”
Eriksson said he was “very disappointed” at Campbell’s decision, and also admitted that he did not know the identity of County’s new owners Munto Finance, who have been the subject of much speculation.
“I don’t know where the money comes from and I am not really interested in it,” he added. “The important thing is that the money comes.”
