Europe may prove Blues’ best chance
NEVER mind their worries about qualifying for next season’s Champions League – Chelsea’s transfer window business has made them strong contenders to finally win the trophy in this campaign.
The arrival of Fernando Torres in particular, and David Luiz, will rejuvenate Carlo Ancelotti’s squad at a time when they were also starting to show signs of improvement. And although the ground they have given to Manchester United in the Premier League may well prove too much to retain that trophy, I now see them as a good bet for Europe’s biggest prize.
Liverpool, meanwhile, look too far off the pace to gatecrash the top four, even though I expect their fortunes to improve following the arrivals of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
Of greater importance than any signing, however, has been the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as manager. He has put a spring back in the step of everyone from Steven Gerrard to the tea lady. Bet your house on him keeping the manager’s job beyond the summer.
Of those who did not buy, I can understand leaders United, since they have a squad that has been there and done it. Arsenal, on the other hand, have run out of steam before and would have benefited from a signing, while I don’t see Tottenham repeating last year’s top four finish.
