Extinction Rebellion London protests: Arrests reach 380 as activists glue themselves to lorry outside Home Office

Members of Extinction Rebellion have glued themselves to the underside of a lorry which is blocking road outside the Home Office.

Police officers have been seen removing protesters from the top of the lorry, which is parked on Marsham Street.

Two protesters have also glued themselves to the department for transport’s headquarters, while another group placed 800 potted trees outside Parliament in a bid to get the government to increase tree planting across the country.

Extinction Rebellion protesters are occupying 11 sites in central London as part of a call for urgent action on climate change. Parallel protests are taking place in other cities across the world.

As of 1pm, there had been 404 arrests in relation to the protests, the Metropolitan Police (the Met) said.

Hundreds of police officers from outside London are being drafted into the capital to prevent Extinction Rebellion activists from blocking the Queen travelling to the state opening of Parliament next Monday.

Assistant commissioner Nick Ephgrave said the Met had requested “mutual aid from other forces” and has a “good plan” to police the demonstrations.
