Fiat Chrysler faces record $105m penalty over Jeep safety issues
Fiat Chrysler is set to face a record $105m (£68m) fine from the US government this week after allegedly failing to complete safety recalls covering millions of Jeep vehicles.
The giant car maker is also expected to be put under the supervision of an independent monitor to oversee its safety actions as part of a settlement agreement with The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to be announced today.
The company may in some instances have to buy back vehicles covered by the 23 safety recalls that have come under investigation, reports this weekend said.
The recalls affect around 11m vehicles and the problems include flaws in Jeeps equipped with rear-mounted fuel tanks, which have been linked to fatal fires.
The $105m fine would beat the previous record for recall violations, held by Japanese carmaker Honda which faced a $70m penalty for problems with its airbags.
