Five Guys is the UK’s favourite fast food joint (sorry Nandos)

Sorry, Nando's. Once we clasped your chickeny goodness close to our cholesterol-enlarged heart, but now you've been edged out by another fast food joint.

We're a fickle – and also extremely hungry – bunch.

Five Guys, the US burger chain that launched in the UK less than three years ago, has edged out its South African competitor to be crowned the nation's favourite fast food joint.

That's an impressive feat considering there are just 41 Five Guys in the UK, while as of 2013 there were around 280 Nando's.

The study, carried out among more than 4,500 UK consumers by Market Force Information, found that Five Guys actually topped fewer categories than Nando's (three vs five) but an "exceptional" performance in food quality, cleanliness and staff friendliness pushed it into the top spot.

Last year's winner Nando's scored highest on speed of service, value for money, "curb appeal" and atmosphere, while Gourmet Burger Kitchen, which came third overall, was recognised for its healthy options.

Meanwhile, the nation's favourite cafe continues to be mega-chain Pret-A-Manger, which came out on top for all but one category – value for money – where Greggs pipped it to the post.
