Travel caterer SSP has a £280m contract to run three outlets inside a food court at Abu Dhabi International airport, paving the way for further expansion in the Middle East.

SSP said the three units in the airport's new Midfield Terminal Building will feature 17 different international and local brands although it didn't disclose the names. The deal will run for between five and ten years, depending on the unit.

The company already runs 15 units in Abu Dhabi's Terminal 3 under brands including Hippopotamus, Bill Bentley, Yum Cha, and Upper Crust.

Nick Inkster, SSP's chief executive in the region, said: "Having had the privilege of being a significant food and beverage provider at Abu Dhabi International Airport for nearly a decade, we are delighted to be building on this important partnership. This deal will also pave the way for further development of our business in the wider Middle East region.”

SSP operates over 2,000 shops and restaurants, mainly in airports and railway stations in 29 countries across the world. It runs franchises on behalf of hundreds of retailers including Marks and Spencer and also owns brands including sandwich chain Upper Crust.
