Foreign office issues updated travel advice to Britons in Turkey following military coup attempt
The Foreign Office (FCO) has issued updated advice to Britons in Turkey after a failed military coup.
"The situation in Turkey appears to be calming following an attempted coup overnight on 15-16 July," it said in an update on Saturday evening, but added that the situation remains "potentially volatile".
Flights are returning to normal after many were cancelled or diverted at the height of the situation. The FCO advises anyone travelling to check with tour operators prior to travel and passengers may need to arrive at the airport earlier for additional security checks.
The embassy has been monitoring the situation closely, and on Friday had advised British nationals "to avoid public places, remain vigilant and monitor the FCO website for travel advice."
It advised to abide by that advice in the main cities of Ankara and Istanbul, with costal areas popular with many holiday makers not appearing "significantly affected".
"Take sensible precautions if you are in the vicinity of any military or security forces. Roadblocks are in place in some areas," the FCO said.
