In-form Konta lifts Wimbledon hopes as Murray is seeded third
Britain's Johanna Konta boosted hopes of a Wimbledon run with a second major scalp in as many days in the Aegon International at Eastbourne yesterday.
Konta followed her first career win over a top-10 opponent on Tuesday with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Spanish world No14 Garbine Muguruza. She faces Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic today in the last eight.
“Not a lot has changed in my shots recently,” said world No146 Konta, who has never reached the second round at Wimbledon. “It is just to do with my belief in my shots. That has changed a lot.”
British No1 Watson crashed out of the same event in straight sets to American Sloane Stephens.
Home hopes Katie Swan, Tara Moore and Katie Dunne all suffered defeat in the second round of qualifiers for Wimbledon, which starts on Monday, but Dan Evans moved to within one match of the main draw.
Men’s world No3 Andy Murray, meanwhile, has been seeded third, meaning he could face top seeds Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer at the semi-final stage. Serena Wiliams is the women’s top seed.
